Hijab row: Protest against Karnataka government continues in parts of Tamil Nadu
India Today
Protests were taken out in various parts of Tamil Nadu by Muslim organisations protesting the Karnataka government’s move to ban hijabs in classrooms.
Condemning the Karnataka government for not allowing Muslim girl students to now wear hijab inside classrooms, various Muslim organisations across Tamil Nadu held protests on Monday, February 14.
In Coimbatore, Yegathuva Muslim Jamath conducted a protest in which Muslim women wore tri-color scarves and participated. Sabarimala, leader of the Women's Liberation Party, participated in the protest and said that Muslim women being stopped from wearing hijab inside classrooms was like ‘Mulakkaram’ or Breast Tax.
The breast Tax was a form of tax imposed upon lower caste women by the Kingdom of Travancore. Lower community women had to pay tax to cover their breasts, which would be calculated in an inappropriate way.
Sabarimala stated that the hijab being banned was to make sure women students do not get educated.
In Trichy, a protest was called by Manithaneya Jananayakq Katchi, where Muslim men and women participated in it, claiming that wearing hijabs is a right given by the Constitution.
When protesters tried to conduct a rally, police intervened and stopped them.
