The father and stepmother on the life of 20-year-old U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, who was killed in the August 2021 suicide bombing at the Kabul airport.

"'I'm exhausted. I've got to go,'" Jared's father, Mark Schmitz, recalled his son saying in one of their final conversations. "He was just hurting for sleep so bad."
