Here’s what makes Skoda Kylaq a compelling addition to the compact SUV segment

Here’s what makes Skoda Kylaq a compelling addition to the compact SUV segment

Skoda Auto India is stepping into the compact SUV segment with the introduction of the Kylaq

The Skoda Kylaq, tailored to meet the unique demands of Indian roads, is a compact SUV that brings a distinctive European flair to the segment. Based on the same platform as the Skoda Kushaq, but measuring under four meters in length, the Kylaq sits comfortably in the competitive compact SUV category, offering a balanced mix of practicality, style and driving dynamics.

In terms of design, the Kylaq adheres to Skoda’s signature crystalline design language, characterised by sharp lines and intricate details. The front is dominated by a shiny black grille with 3D strips, flanked by sleek projector headlights that exude a modern appeal. The bonnet and front bumper are sculpted to perfection, giving the vehicle a dynamic and sporty look. Moving along the side, 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels add a touch of sophistication. The roof rails, although non-functional, contribute to the aesthetic appeal, and the rear is punctuated by LED tail lamps and the prominent Skoda wordmark.

Stepping inside, the Kylaq offers a thoughtfully designed cabin loaded with modern conveniences. The dashboard layout is clean and intuitive, centred around a large touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A digital driver information cluster provides critical data at a glance, ensuring the driver remains well-informed. Comfort is taken seriously, with electronically adjustable ventilated seats for the front passengers and a climate-control system complemented by rear air vents. Charging options are abundant, with multiple USB-C ports and a wireless charging dock, catering to the tech-savvy user. The audio system delivers an immersive experience, and steering-mounted controls enhance driving convenience. While the front seats are exemplary, the rear seats, though well-contoured, may feel slightly cramped for taller passengers. However, the trade-off is a class-leading 446-liter boot space, making it a practical choice for road trips or daily errands. The sunroof in the top variant adds an extra layer of appeal, especially for those seeking a touch of luxury.

Under the hood, the Kylaq is powered by a 1.0 litre TSI engine, a 999cc unit delivering 116 PS of power and 178 Nm of torque. This three-cylinder engine surprises with its smooth performance, devoid of the typical vibrations associated with such configurations. The engine’s ability to run on E20 fuel adds an eco-conscious edge. As far as efficiency goes, we got a respectable 14.2 kmpl —which included city driving, a highway run and swerving through the serpentine roads of a hilly section in Goa. Having said that, the claimed mileage is close to 19 kmpl, so depending on your drive cycle or terrain, it is possible to better the numbers. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual transmission, which offers slick gear shifts and a sporty driving experience, or a six-speed torque converter automatic that ensures a hassle-free and refined drive. Both options are well-suited to urban commutes and spirited drives alike.

On the road, Kylaq feels impressively stable, offering a big-car vibe that belies its compact dimensions. Its suspension strikes an excellent balance between comfort and handling, soaking up road imperfections while remaining composed through twists and turns. The Kylaq shines on hilly terrain.Braking is also decent on the Kylaq. While it does run disc brakes up front and drum brakes on the rear wheels, it does a decent job of quickly coming to a halt.

Safety is a cornerstone of Skoda’s philosophy, and the Kylaq reflects this commitment. With a five-star Bharat NCAP rating for both adults and children, it provides peace of mind for families. Six airbags come as standard, along with advanced safety features such as electronic stability control and hill hold control. The robust body shell, crafted from ultra-high-strength and high-strength materials, ensures optimal protection in the event of a collision.

Overall, the Skoda Kylaq is a compelling addition to the compact SUV segment. Its striking design, feature-packed interior, capable engine options, and top-tier safety credentials make it a strong contender against rivals like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet. While rear-seat space might not be its strongest suit, the Kylaq does have a lot going for it, especially when it comes to build quality, features and value for money.
