Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bhupendra Patel will take oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for a second straight term in Gandhinagar on Monday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries, BJP leaders said on Sunday. Mr. Patel will be administered the oath as the 18th chief minister by Governor Acharya Devvrat at a function to be held at the Helipad Ground near the new Secretariat in Gandhinagar at 2 PM.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud will on Monday administer the oath of office to Justice Dipankar Datta whose name was cleared by the Centre for judgeship in the Supreme Court. Justice Datta, son of late Salil Kumar Datta, a former judge of the Calcutta High Court, and brother-in-law of Justice Amitava Roy, who was a former judge of the apex court, will take oath at 10.30 AM in courtroom 1 of the Supreme Court. With the swearing in of Justice Datta, the outgoing Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, the total number of judges at the apex court will go up to 28 against the sanctioned strength of 34, including the CJI.
Women and children are the main targets of “foreign-funded” religious conversion in the country and the Centre and state governments have failed to take appropriate steps to check it, the Supreme Court has been told. In a written submission filed before a bench of Justices M R Shah and C T Ravikumar which is hearing a plea against religious conversions, PIL petitioner Ashwini Upadhyay referred to the legal vacuum on the issue and said this has led to deployment of “unethical predatory conversion strategies” to convert socially and economically backward citizens.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will inaugurate the India Global Forum UAE 2022 that gets underway in Dubai on Monday. It is a gala five-day event that will bring together leading political, business and cultural personalities from India, the UAE and across the world. This is the first major international event following India’s ascendency to the G20 Presidency, and will be held in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from December 12 to 16.
A five-member TMC parliamentary delegation will visit the Election Commission of India on Monday to raise the alleged violation of the Representation of the People Act in connection with party spokesperson Saket Gokhale’s arrest, the party said. The delegation will comprise Lok Sabha MPs Saugata Roy and Kalyan Banerjee, and Rajya Sabha MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Mausam Noor and Derek O’Brien, it said.
Twitter is once again attempting to launch its premium service, a month after a previous attempt failed. The social media company said on Saturday it would let users buy subscriptions to Twitter Blue to get a blue checkmark and access special features starting Monday. The blue checkmark was originally given to companies, celebrities, government entities and journalists verified by the platform.

“We are judges and therefore, cannot act like Mughals of a bygone era ... the writ courts in the guise of doing justice cannot transcend the barriers of law,” the High Court of Karnataka observed while setting aside an order of a single judge, who in 2016 had extended the lease of a public premises allotted to a physically challenged person to 20 years contrary to 12-year period stipulated in the law.
