Half of the US is partially vaccinated, but experts say more is needed to make the next holiday gathering safer

As the US celebrated Memorial Day, health experts celebrated that more than half of the population was at least partially vaccinated -- but reminded the public there is work to still be done to keep the next holiday safe from Covid-19 as well.
"It's great news that people can see their friends, they feel comfortable to travel because they're vaccinated," William Haseltine former Harvard Medical School professor told CNN. "The bad news is if you are not vaccinated, you are still at risk, and your risk is about as high as it was before." Crowds flocked to beaches and bars over the weekend, a sight that experts said was less concerning now that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 50.5% of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine and 40.7% are fully vaccinated.
One year ago this week, Joe Biden was president. I was in Doha, Qatar, negotiating with Israel and Hamas to finalize a ceasefire and hostage release deal. The incoming Trump team worked closely with us, a rare display of nonpartisanship to free hostages and end a war. It feels like a decade ago. A lot can happen in a year, as 2025 has shown.

The US State Department on Tuesday imposed visa sanctions on a former top European Union official and employees of organizations that combat disinformation for alleged censorship – sharply ratcheting up the Trump administration’s fight against European regulations that have impacted digital platforms, far-right politicians and Trump allies, including Elon Musk.
