Guatemalan authorities raided the offices of the NGO Save the Children on Thursday citing complaints over the treatment of Guatemalan children in Texas, the country’s Public Prosecutor told CNN. According to the public prosecutor, the raid was carried out by authorities from the Special Public Prosecutor against Impunity and the Civil Police after an investigation was opened to look into the treatment of migrant children in Texas shelters. “The Public Prosecutor received a complaint referencing and highlighting incidents regarding Guatemalan children and teenagers being subject to vulnerabilities in shelters in Texas, connected with a network which [involves] NGOs that operate in the United States and Guatemala,” a spokesperson for Public Prosecutor’s Office, Juan Luis Pantaleon, said. Pantaleon explained that the raid was to gather information for the investigation. The raid included document searches and seizures, the prosecutor’s office said on X. The complaint was filed in Guatemala but authorities requested the help of the Texas Attorney General’s Office since some of the shelters allegedly involved are located there. Save the Children, a British organization which helps children in disasters and humanitarian crises, said in a statement that it was “not given any specific accusation and there is no evidence that support any accusation of improper conduct.”
Before Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took the stage at a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa, last month, a team of his campaign staffers and volunteers organized hundreds of attendees through an assembly line of government forms, ID checks and color-coded wristbands. The bureaucratic workforce contrasted starkly against the classic rock music blaring over the speakers, the crowded bar at the back of the venue and the jovial spirit circulating among Midwesterners excitedly awaiting Kennedy’s remarks.
