Greater Chennai Corporation Council approves storm-water drain projects in Anna Nagar and Teynampet zones

Greater Chennai Corporation allocates ₹1,032 crore for storm-water drains, focusing on flood mitigation measures with ADB and KfW Bank assistance.
With a focus on flood mitigation measures, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has set aside ₹1,032 crore to the Storm-water Drain Department, which is the highest allocation made among departments in its Budget. The Council on Friday passed several resolutions for constructing new storm-water drains and improving existing ones.
In Anna Nagar zone, ward 103, a damaged storm-water drain on the northern side of 4th Main Road, from 6th Main Road to 5th Link Road, will be dismantled and replaced with a new drain for 310 m at a cost of ₹1.1 crore. The work will be funded through the GCC’s Capital Fund.
In ward 104 of the same zone, a 776-m storm-water drain on East Main Road, from School Road to 100 Feet Road, will be rebuilt for ₹2.83 crore. Chief Engineer (General) K. Vijayakumar approved the estimate, and the funds will come from the Capital Fund, the resolution said.
In Teynampet zone, ward 110, three projects were approved. A 200-m drain on Tank Bund Road will be constructed for ₹1.7 crore. A 320-m storm-water drain on Vaikundapuram 2nd Street will be built for ₹1.44 crore. A 350-m drain on Kamarajapuram Main Road will be constructed for ₹1.57 crore.
The Council also approved four major storm-water drain projects for the fiscal 2024-25 in Anna Nagar zone. The projects include demolishing and reconstructing damaged drains on both the northern and southern sides of Second Avenue in ward 104, a stretch of Second Avenue in ward 103, and the southern side of Sixth Avenue in ward 105, each covering a length of 1,070 m. The total cost of all four projects has been estimated to be ₹17.6 crore.
