Expressing concerns about the imposition of the Emergency Act over the ongoing truckers’ protest, Indo-Canadian organisations have slammed Justin Trudeau and asked him to follow the way PM Modi handled the farmers' protest in India.
Indo-Canadian organisations have expressed concern over the imposition of the Emergency Act in Canada over the ongoing truckers’ protest and asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to follow the way Prime Minister Modi handled the farmers' protest in India.
Canada India Global Forum's (CIGF) British Columbia chapter called for “democratic” means to be used to handle the crisis rather than imposing “draconian laws”. “We are pained to witness recent developments in Canada relating to the use of draconian powers against the "Freedom Convoy 2022" protesters,” the statement said.
The statement added, “At this time, we recall the agitation by farmers in India in 2021, and the commendable way in which the Government of India, under Prime Minister Modi, engaged with them and resolved all issues through democratic and peaceful means.”
Recalling, 'the gratuitous advice offered by Prime Minister Trudeau to the Government of India on how to handle those protests. Advice, sadly, that he has not followed himself' the forum urged the Canadian Prime Minister to “follow the example of (Indian) Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi in handling peaceful protests through democratic means”.

In December 2020, when there were farmers protests in India against the three farm laws, Trudeau said, “Canada will always be there to defend the right to peaceful protest. We believe in the importance of dialogue and that’s why we’ve reached out through multiple means directly to the Indian authorities to highlight our concerns.”
Shivendra Dwivedi, national president of the Canada India Global Forum (CIGF) urged for a “peaceful” resolution to the crisis and for Prime Minister Trudeau and his government to engage in dialogue like India did.
