Fire at Vellalore dump yard in Coimbatore extinguished after five hours with over 300 officials and personnel on site.
A fire that raged through three acres of the Vellalore dump yard in Coimbatore city on Sunday evening was put out after about five hours.
According to sources, the fire broke out at approximately 3.20 p.m. on three acres covered with legacy waste on the 400-acre dump yard site. Fire and Rescue Services were alerted, and a firefighting vehicle stationed on-site was deployed to the dump yard.
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, who was present at the site to oversee the operations, said that five fire tenders, ten excavators, and approximately 30 water lorries were mobilised to fight the fire.
A firefighter at the scene said that high wind speeds contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The smoke made breathing difficult and impaired visibility, complicating the fire-fighting efforts.
Over 300 officials and personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services and Coimbatore Corporation were on site on Sunday evening to put out the fire. There was a similar incident at the beginning of the month.

The silent reading movement in the Mylapore-Mandaveli-RA Puram area showed up first at Nageswara Rao Park around two years ago, with modest ambitions, when Balaji launched it along with other reading enthusiasts from the region. This initiative has now moved parks, and seems to set to get entrenched in one. Due to renovation work at Nageswara Park, the reading session became irregular. With the Nageswara Rao park work gaining more surface area, it had to be shifted elsewhere. And it seems set to continue with a newly discovered green patch in RK Nagar in the Sundays to follow.
