Learn about improving yields with bio-fertilisers at a research trial supported by the Gates Foundation in Bhavanisagar.
A demonstration on sustaining soil health and maximising yield was held for farmers at the Agricultural Research Station in Bhavanisagar on Friday.
The event showcased a research trial on tapioca aimed at assessing the efficacy of bio-fertilisers in improving yields. The trial is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. A field day was organised to present the outcomes of this trial to 100 farmers from various blocks in the district.
M. Raveendran, Director of Research, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, distributed bioinoculant kits with technical booklets to farmers. He emphasised the importance of using fertilisers judiciously and warned that indiscriminate use could end up harming beneficial microbial populations. Bio-fertilisers not only enhance quality of the produce but also lowers farmers’ input costs by 25% to 50%, he added.
P. Balachander, R. Anandhan and R. Raghu, Agricultural Microbiologists from TNAU, explained the benefits of the application of biofertilisers to field crops.
