Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers’ Association led by Hallikerehundi Bhagyaraj held a demonstration against the “official inaction” to their demand for removal of illegal resorts, bars and hotels that were operating in the forest areas.
The activists belonging to the organisation held a ‘shirtless’ demonstration outside the office of the Regional Commissioner in Mysuru on Wednesday, shouting slogans against the officials and elected representatives.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhagyaraj recalled their protest held about a month ago demanding a joint survey by farmers’ leaders and officials to identify the illegal constructions, bars, restaurants and hotels operating in Kabini, Bandipur, and Nagarahole forest areas.
The Regional Commissioner, responding to their demand, had subsequently convened a meeting at the Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner’s office and directed the officials to submit a report within ten days.
“However, no report has been made public so far, no action has been taken to remove illegal structures, and not even notices have been issued”, he alleged, while condemning the failure of the officials to take action in the regard.
If the officials had not found any illegal activities, they should give a written statement in the regard, he demanded, while asking the officials to write to the government seeking a probe under the supervision of a sitting judge if there is any political interference in their inquiry.

Bulrushes in wetlands are not encroachments, but ‘legal homes’ to birds in the crake and rail family and warblers, so government line agencies ought to tread on them thoughtfully
