Facebook's success was built on algorithms. Can they also fix it?

For billions of people around the world, Facebook can be a source for cute baby pictures, vaccine misinformation and everything in between — and all of it surfaces in our feeds with the help of algorithms.
Now, hours of testimony from, and thousands of pages of documents released by, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen have renewed scrutiny of the impact that Facebook and its algorithms have on teens, democracy and society at large. It's also raised the question of just how much Facebook, and perhaps services like it, can or should rethink using a bevy of algorithms to determine which pictures, videos and news we see.
