The coup began on Sunday with heavy gunfire near the presidential palace in the country’s capital Conakry. Soon after, pictures of the 83-year-old president emerged surrounded by men in military fatigues. After taking power, Guinea's new military rulers released dozens of political prisoners. As many as 79 prisoners held on various charges were released late Tuesday. All of them have reportedly been invited to a political rally on Saturday, hinting the release to be a move likely to win them favour with the opposition.
