Doha, Qatar: Leading scholars and experts convened at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) to advance the practical application of Islamic psychology within mental health service delivery.

Hosted by the College of Islamic Studies (CIS), the ‘2nd International Symposium on Islamic Psychology: Integrating Islamic Spirituality Across Mental Health Services in the Middle East’ embodies HBKU’s commitment to scholarship that attends to regional needs while contributing to relevant global debates in the field. Building on the success of its inaugural event, this year delved deeper into the institutional challenges of spiritual integration, focusing on policy and patient care.

Discussions examined cultural distinctions within local and regional Arab contexts, identifying opportunities and barriers that influence care delivery. Participants also addressed the need to destigmatise and expand access to critical support. In doing so, the symposium helped define future directions for research, education, and clinical practice, ensuring that Islamic Psychology remains evidence-based and responsive to societal needs.

Reflecting on the significance of the symposium, Dr. Recep Şentürk, Dean, CIS, said, “We are proud to host an event which undoubtedly aligns with HBKU’s commitment to advance interdisciplinary research that responds to modern challenges through Islamic academic excellence. Our MA in Counseling Psychology further underscores our investment in educating a new generation of mental health professionals and expanding the application of Islamic studies across multiple disciplines.”

Symposium Chair, Programme Director of Islamic Psychology and Assistant Professor, CIS, Dr. Hooman Keshavarzi added, “In Islam, health is understood as a holistic state that encompasses the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of the human experience. Through this timely gathering, we are advancing a shared vision for integrating Islamic spirituality and psychology across diverse mental health care settings.
