Following an hours-long natural gas outage in the small mining town of Cochenour, Ont., municipal leaders have met with Enbridge Gas to discuss ways to prevent future service disruptions.
A natural gas outage was reported in the northwestern Ontario community on Dec. 19 around 8 a.m. CT. Shortly after 6:45 p.m. CT, a spokesperson for Enbridge Gas told CBC News it had “successfully completed the necessary repairs and testing and are now ready to begin restoring gas service to the affected homes.”
Just under 600 people live in Cochenour, which is part of the Municipality of Red Lake in northwestern Ontario.
The outage left residents without heat on a day that reached –26 C with the wind chill.
On Monday, the Municipality of Red Lake issued a statement on Facebook, saying that its mayor and chief administrative officer had met with Enbridge Gas to discuss recent natural gas disruptions in Cochenour.
“Enbridge has assured the municipality that the likelihood of any future natural gas disruptions is minimal based on upgrades they have made or have planned for the near future,” it says.
“We will continue to remain in contact with representatives of Enbridge and provide updates, as required.”
CBC News reached out to Enbridge Gas and received an emailed statement from a company spokesperson on Wednesday.
“We co-ordinated with the municipality throughout the outage and restoration process to support information sharing, and the community was kept apprised of restoration timelines,” Enbridge Gas says.
“The necessary repairs were completed and service was restored safely, and further preventative work is planned for the summer to help support continued system reliability.”
During December’s outage, Cochenour resident Alexandra Rozender told CBC News she was worried about her pets’ safety amid the freezing temperatures. She said a similar natural gas outage occurred the previous January, which lasted nearly 24 hours.
“Safety is our top priority, and we want to assure customers that we’re doing what we can to prevent further service disruptions,” Enbridge Gas said in Wednesday’s statement.
“We remain focused on taking steps within our operations that support safe, reliable service for the Cochenour community and surrounding area.”
