Chennai office-goers stranded after EMU train derails at Avadi station. 5 EMU trains delayed, 3 Express trains regulated, 3 Express trains rescheduled. Rectification work to take until noon. Commuters face hardships.
A large number of office-goers were stranded after an empty rake of the electrical multiple unit (EMU) train derailed in the Avadi railway station in the early morning on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. This resulted in the disruption of both suburban train services and long distance trains.
According to Southern Railway, 5 EMU trains towards Chennai Central were delayed and 3 Express trains from Chennai Central including Vande Bharat (Chennai - Mysore), Shatabdhi (Chennai - Mysore) & Kovai Express (Chennai - Coimbatore) were regulated near Ambattur railway station. Three Express trains Originating from Chennai Central were rescheduled ( Saptagiri Express, Brindavan Express & Double Decker Express).
The derailment took place when the EMU was being shunted from the Annanur depot for operating the train from Avadi to Chennai beach railway station.
A senior official of the Southern Railway confirming the derailment said the EMU was being brought to the platform when the loco driver operated the train without stopping at the platform at around 5.30 a.m. today. The derailment resulted in the rake crashing into the track line meant for long distance trains.
The railway staff who are engaged in the rectification work claimed the train services would be normalised only by noon.
R. Senthilnathan, a commuter from Tiruvallur, said the suspension of suburban train services caused undue hardships for the office-goers on Tuesday morning..

Currently, only the services in the 32 series stop at the section of the road adjacent to the Broadway terminus, temporarily closed on account of reconstruction work. Small traders association tells R. Ragu that ensuring the services now accommodated at the temporary terminus at Island Grounds stop at NSC Bose road would benefit visitors to the markets in Parrys

The silent reading movement in the Mylapore-Mandaveli-RA Puram area showed up first at Nageswara Rao Park around two years ago, with modest ambitions, when Balaji launched it along with other reading enthusiasts from the region. This initiative has now moved parks, and seems to set to get entrenched in one. Due to renovation work at Nageswara Park, the reading session became irregular. With the Nageswara Rao park work gaining more surface area, it had to be shifted elsewhere. And it seems set to continue with a newly discovered green patch in RK Nagar in the Sundays to follow.
