Ellie Kemper is at the center of a Twitter controversy after photos surfaced of the actress at a 1999 ball in St. Louis several believe is controversial.

The Atlantic reported in 2014 that it depicted a similar appearance to a Klansman. However, Rolling Stone notes that the ball predates the Ku Klux Klan by several decades. Representatives for Kemper did not respond to Fox News' multiple requests for comment. In a statement to Fox News on Tuesday, the Veiled Prophet (VP) Organization denounced racism.
