Dramatic video shows Coast Guard pulling woman from submerged car near brink of Niagara Falls
CBSN
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew braved poor visibility and frigid rapids to reach a car partly submerged in water near the brink of Niagara Falls, then lowered a rescue swimmer on a hoist who pulled out the woman trapped inside. She did not survive.
"We have never had a vehicle in the water this close" to the edge of the Falls, New York State Park Police Cpt. Christopher Rola told CBS affiliate WIVB-TV.
The station captured dramatic video of the Coast Guard's harrowing rescue attempt.
Ashley White received her earliest combat action badge from the United States Army soon after the first lieutenant arrived in Afghanistan. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
