Distribution of baby care kits commence in Thoothukudi
Distribution of “Baby Care Kits” for Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants commenced at Government Medical College and Hospital in Thoothukudi, with Dean G. Sivakumar inaugurating the programme on Wednesday.
The Tamil Nadu government has introduced the “Baby Care Kit” scheme to strengthen nutrition and immunity among Low Birth Weight (LBW) babies, reduce infant mortality rate and to ensure continuous monitoring of their growth.
The kit contains iron supplement drops, Vitamin D3 drops, multivitamin drops, infant supplementary medical records and a booklet on 12 signs of child development.
In accordance with the scheme, the inaugural event for distribution of “Baby Care Kits” was held at Government Medical College and Hospital in Thoothukudi, where kits were distributed to 14 LBW babies.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Sivakumar said that the Tamil Nadu government has launched the scheme with an objective that a healthy children population would contribute to building a strong India in future. He added that the kit contains iron drops, Vitamin D3 drops and multivitamin drops, which helps in improving the child’s health and promote weight gain. He advised the mothers to administer medicines strictly as per medical guidance.
The kit also has a medical record card in which the child’s weight, height and head circumference will be recorded regularly up to 12 months. This will enable doctors to accurately monitor the child’s growth and development.
