The Delimitation Commission has been tasked with redrawing the boundaries of the assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir after the state was split into two Union Territories. The Commission will hold meetings in Srinagar on April 4 and in Jammu on April 5.
The Delimitation Commission is set to visit Srinagar and Jammu on April 4 and April 5, to hold meetings with members of the public and civil society groups who have submitted suggestions and objections on its draft delimitation proposal for the Union territory.
The Commission’s primary task is redrawing the boundaries of the various assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies based on recent census.
The Commission is headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai and has chief election commissioner Sushil Chandra and J&K state election commission chief as ex-officio members.
It also has five associate members: three national conference Lok Sabha MPs (Farooq Abdullah, Hasnain Masoodi and Mohammad Akbar Lone), BJP MP Jugal Kishore and Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
Around 300 representations were received by the panel. Most of the representations received by the delimitation commission were from Jammu, Anantnag and Kupwara regions.
Over 40 representations have sought name change of constituencies. Other suggestions include inclusion or exclusion of certain areas.
The Commission has been receiving suggestions to rename Anantnag parliamentary constituency as Anantnag-Rajouri. Some suggestions also talk about adding areas from Jammu and Kashmir to Anantnag.
