Deepti Sharma opens up on controversial Charlie Dean run-out: It was our plan because she was doing it repeatedly

Deepti Sharma opened up on the controversial run-out of Charlie Dean, saying team India planned it after the English cricketer was repeatedly stepping out of her crease at the non-striker's end during 3rd ODI at Lord's.

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma opened up on the controversial run-out of Charlie Dean at the non-striker's end, saying her team planned that mode of dismissal after realising the English cricketer was repeatedly leaving her crease before the release of the ball.

Deepti Sharma pulled off the run-out, which is within the laws but is seen by many against the 'Spirit of Cricket'. In the 44th over, Deepti found Dean leaving the crease before she released the ball and thus ran out her to help India beat England by 16 runs and complete a 3-0 clean sweep over England for the first time in the latter's backyard.

The victory gave veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami a perfect farewell at Lord's on September 24. After returning to India, Deepti told reporters: "It was our plan because she was doing it repeatedly. We had also warned her. So, according to the guidelines of the rules we did it."

The mode of dismissal has once again left the viewers divided, with some lauding Deepti for going by the law and some criticising the Indian for not respecting the 'Spirit of Cricket'. Following the incident, MCC, the keeper of the laws, said its message to non-strikers remains the same to stay in their ground until the ball has left the bowler's hand.

The MCC further said that the run-out during the third ODI between India and England was "an unusual end to an exciting match", but pointed out that it was "properly officiated and should not be considered as anything more."

The ICC, on September 20, announced changes to Playing Conditions of the controversial run-out, which will come into effect on October 1. The world cricket governing body said: "The Playing Conditions follow the Laws in moving this method of effecting a run out from the ‘Unfair Play’ section to the ‘Run out’ section."
