IPL 2022: Batting great Sunil Gavasksar also said new captain Ravindra Jadeja will be under tremendous pressure after 3 straight defeats for Chennai Super Kings. CSK slipped to a 54-run defeat to PBKS on Sunday.
Batting great Sunil Gavaskar said it was unfortunate that MS Dhoni was not able to get a move on along with Shivam Dube when the young all-rounder was hitting it big in Chennai Super Kings' unsuccessful chase of 181 against Punjab Kings on Sunday in Mumbai.
CSK suffered their 3rd straight defeat, their worst start to an IPL season, after a 54-run defeat to PBKS at the Brabourne Stadium. Chasing 181, Chennai got off to a horror start as they were reduced to 36/5 in the 8th over.
Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni stitched a 62-run stand to steady the ship and keep CSK in the chape with the former playing a fine counter-attacking knock. With 3 sixes and 6 boundaries, Dube hit 57 from just 30 balls but he fell in the 15th over to PBKS leg-spinner Liam Livingstone who had shone with the bet as well on Sunday.
Highlighting that Dhoni could have done better had he kept the strike moving during his stand with Dube, Gavaskar said even the best of batters do find it difficult in steep chases.
Dhoni was reeling at 10 from 20 balls and finished with 23 off 28 after being caught down the leg in Rahul Chahar's over. CSK were bowled out for 126 in just 18 overs, handing PBKS a commanding win.
"With MSD, what you see is that even if he doesn't start hitting the big ones, he is moving the strike along, getting those ones and twos. He wasn't quite able to do that this time around. That's where CSK got stuck just that little bit," Gavaskar told Star Sports.
"If they had a situation where Shivam Dube was hitting the ball so well, they needed to get a move on along with him. That didn't quite happen. Look at those some of those dot bills that he played, yes, later on, he made up with the boundaries.
