COVID-19: Maharashtra’s active case tally nudges 1.40 lakh

Death toll climbs to 1,16,026; total cases reach 59,44,710
Just 5,890 recoveries were recorded across Maharashtra on Thursday against 9,830 new Covid-19 cases as the State’s active case tally rose to 1,39,960. More than 600 deaths were added to the progressive death toll of which 400 fatalities were part of the Health Department’s ongoing ‘reconciliation’ process. In all, 167 deaths occurred during the last 48 hours and a further 69 occurred in the past week. The death toll has climbed rapidly to 1,16,026 with the State’s case fatality rate rising to 1.95%.The election authorities are gearing up for the counting of votes cast in the simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, scheduled to be held on June 4. The Collectors and Election Officers of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) districts said on May 23 (Thursday) that their teams were ready for the counting of votes.
Responding to the prolonged water scarcity, the residents of the area took to the streets in protest on Wednesday. The protest, which drew attention to their plight, stopped only after the intervention of the police. It was not until 1.30 p.m. that a 4000-litre tanker was finally delivered by BWSSB, providing relief to the water-starved residents.
