150 districts with a positivity rate of over 15% might go under a complete lockdown in order to break the coronavirus transmission chain.

As the nation is witnessing an upswing in the number of COVID cases, the Centre has drafted a proposal to impose a complete lockdown in almost 150 districts with a positivity rate of over 15%, in order to break the chain of transmission. However, during the complete lockdown, a defined set of essential services will be allowed to function. These steps were proposed in a high-level meeting on Tuesday. The Union Health Ministry will take a final decision in this regard in consultation with the state governments.According to reports, a senior official has said that stringent lockdown measures were a necessity in districts with high positivity rates in order to break the chain of transmission and it is the rising positivity rate in various cities that has concerned the authorities the most.On April 22, India’s tally of fresh COVID-19 cases breached the three lakh mark for the first time and since then the country has been reporting a rise of more than three lakh coronavirus cases daily. The worst affected states are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Karnataka and Kerala.Currently, states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan already have strict Covid restrictions in place. The situation is worrisome because it has put a lot of pressure on the already fragile health system of India. In the last 24 hours, coronavirus has infected 3,60,960 people and has claimed 3,293 lives. The total number of active cases now stands at 29,78,709 while 25,56,182 vaccine shots were administered in a single day in the country.
