Islanders could be in for another messy mix of winter weather starting Wednesday afternoon.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Queens and Prince counties, saying that a combination of snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and rain is expected.
The weather agency says the “wintry precipitation” will likely affect the region beginning Wednesday and continuing into Thursday.
“There is the potential for a prolonged period of freezing rain overnight on Wednesday. A transition to rain is expected by Thursday morning,” the agency says, adding that the freezing rain could last between four and eight hours.
Environment Canada warns the ice could create slippery and hazardous travel and walking conditions. Ice buildup on trees and utility infrastructure could also lead to damage or possible power outages.
The agency is urging Islanders to plan ahead in case schools or activities are cancelled, consider adjusting travel plans and continue monitoring forecasts.
