College consumers should be wary of forking over big bucks for certain degrees. Americans have believed, for too long, that the only ticket to middle-class life came from college..

President Barack Obama proposed rating colleges based in part on how well their graduates earn a living and pay back their loans. The powerful higher education lobby crushed the idea. Over a lifetime, getting a college degree pays off financially.
