Coimbatore Corporation to convert medians under flyovers into green spaces with private funding for city beautification and maintenance.
The Coimbatore Corporation has initiated a project to convert road medians into green spaces as part of its city beautification efforts.
The project will be carried out with funding from private companies.
Work has started in the median under the Trichy Road flyover, where the civic body plans to plant 100 saplings. It has also sought approval from the Highways Department to implement similar projects on Avinashi Road and other locations.
A Corporation official said that an expression of interest will be invited for private sponsorships to involve businesses and organisations in maintaining these spaces. “The project aims to prevent garbage accumulation, unauthorised posters, and graffiti on flyover pillars while improving the city’s appearance,” the official said. “Converting these into green spaces will create a cleaner environment and discourage misuse of public infrastructure. No advertisement boards will be placed in these areas, as they could cause distractions.”
The official said that roundabouts at some junctions have been taken up for beautification, and the Corporation has identified over 10 more locations for similar work. These spaces will be developed and maintained by private companies funding the project. The Corporation will coordinate with sponsors to ensure regular upkeep, discuss designs, and identify more locations where similar work can be taken up in the future.
