CUPE Local 4705 made the announcement on social media Thursday morning.
"It is with great sorrow that we announce the loss of our dear brother yesterday, in a fatal motor vehicle accident, at work," the union said.
"We send our condolences to his family, friends and co-workers."
The city sent a statement about the crash around noon Thursday.
"The City of Greater Sudbury can now confirm that this tragic incident resulted in the death of an employee of the municipality. At the request of the family, we will not be sharing the employee’s name or identifying information," the news release said.
"We are heartbroken by this loss, and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of this individual."
