China mourns beloved scientist who saved millions from hunger -- and detains those who insult him

As people across China this weekend mourned Yuan Longping, a symbol of China's scientific prowess and national hero, even the slightest voice of discord was too much for the Chinese government.
Yuan, who cultivated the world's first high-yield hybrid rice strain and saved millions from hunger, died of organ failure at the age of 90 on Saturday. His death triggered an outpouring of grief across the nation. In Changsha, where he died, crowds lined the streets and cars honked as his hearse drove by on Saturday. On Sunday, tens of thousands of people lined up in the rain outside his funeral home, state media reported.
The two men killed as they floated holding onto their capsized boat in a secondary strike against a suspected drug vessel in early September did not appear to have radio or other communications devices, the top military official overseeing the strike told lawmakers on Thursday, according to two sources with direct knowledge of his congressional briefings.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth risked compromising sensitive military information that could have endangered US troops through his use of Signal to discuss attack plans, a Pentagon watchdog said in an unclassified report released Thursday. It also details how Hegseth declined to cooperate with the probe.
