A child is in critical condition after a residential fire in Markham, Ont., on Friday, York Regional Police say.
Crews arrived on scene around 12:02 p.m. near 16th Avenue and 9th Line, police said on social media.
Initially police said the home had been evacuated with no injuries to report. But later, police provided an update that a child had been located by fire crews while they were clearing the scene.
The child was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, said police.
Investigators are looking into what caused the fire and assessing the extent of damage to the property, said Jim Demetriou with the Office of the Fire Marshal at a news conference.
He said there were no other updates on the child or investigation for the time being.
Roads are closed in the area, said police.

Municipal councils across Essex County and in Chatham-Kent and Sarnia have spent this year’s budget season trying to keep tax increases manageable while battling inflation and soaring policing costs and weighing the immediate cost of repairing aging infrastructure against the long-term cost of holding off.
