Capitals’ email snafu causes Alex Ovechkin retirement drama
NY Post
Don’t call it the farewell tour — yet.
The Washington Capitals put out an Alex Ovechkin retirement fire Thursday after “an email was sent from an individual with the corporate sales department that mistakenly alluded to next year” being the captain’s final season.
“No decision has been made on Alex Ovechkin’s future following the 2025-26 NHL season,” the Capitals said in a message on X.
Speculation about Ovechkin’s possible swan song percolated earlier in the day after it was reported emails had been sent to season ticket holders informing them the upcoming NHL season would be the 39-year-old winger’s last.
The email read, “OCTOBER – the start of Capitals hockey and Alex Ovechkin’s FINAL NHL SEASON,” according to The Hockey Writers.
Ovechkin is coming off a record-smashing season, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals mark in April.

SAN DIEGO — As you may have seen elsewhere in this newspaper (and also if you haven’t deleted me yet from your social media), I have a book coming out Tuesday called “The Bosses of The Bronx.” Much of it details the 37 years’ worth of antics, winning, losing, winning again and overall mania of George Steinbrenner’s time with the Yankees.

Cade Cunningham, almost inarguably the best player in the East this season, is likely out for the remainder of the regular season. That’s the word out of Detroit following the depressing news that Cunningham punctured a lung when he took a knee to his side Tuesday from Washington’s Tre Johnson while chasing a loose ball.

Wednesday was another positive day at Yankees camp. For the first time since March 6, 2025 — an outing in which he knew “something wasn’t right,” which began a weeks-long saga that ended on the operating table for Tommy John surgery — Gerrit Cole was back on a mound and facing hitters in game action.
