Prosecutors have filed a slew of new charges against Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, the man accused of killing 10 people at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, in March. The added charges come just a day before the 22-year-old is scheduled to appear in court for a status hearing.
Alissa is accused of opening fire at the King Soopers grocery store on March 22 with a gun he legally purchased days before the shooting. Witnesses described a chaotic scene in the store, as shots were fired and terrified shoppers fled. Ten people, including 51-year-old police officer Eric Talley, were killed. The new charges include more than a dozen counts of attempted murder and nearly 50 sentence enhancers, according to court documents released by the Boulder County District Attorney's office on Monday. In total, Alissa is now facing 115 counts, including the murder of 10 people and the attempted murder of 15 civilians and 11 members of law enforcement.Ashley White received her earliest combat action badge from the United States Army soon after the first lieutenant arrived in Afghanistan. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
