BJP legislators urge NIA probe into murder of Hindutva activist, suspect PFI involvement, demand swift investigation by police.
A delegation of BJP legislators, including MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta and BJP State General Secretary and Karkala MLA V. Sunil Kumar, on Thursday urged Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal to recommend for National Investigation Agency (NIA) to probe into the murder of Suhas Shetty, a Hindutva activist and a rowdy sheeter, near Bajpe on May 1.
Talking to reporters after submitting a memorandum to Mr. Agrawal, the Karkala MLA said the BJP suspects involvement of members of banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in the murder of Shetty. There is suspicion that some persons who operated from abroad funded the murder of Shetty. The murder seems have been done in an organised manner with the involvement of about 40 persons.
Mr. Kumar, pointing out the alleged conspiracy on the part of a police constable in the murder of Suhas Shetty, and also alleged that the BJP leaders contested the city police’s delay in questioning two women who were accused of harbouring eight accused arrested in the murder case.
Expressing his displeasure over the slow pace of investigation by the Mangaluru police, Mr. Kumar said: “We do not want the city police to take this investigation lightly. We urged the Police Commissioner to recommend NIA probe into this murder, without succumbing to any pressure from the State government.”
If the Police Commissioner fails to act in another three days, then the party will be forced to launch an agitation, Mr. Kumar said.
The MLA said the BJP national president J.P. Nadda will meet the family members of Shetty on May 11.
Mr. Agrawal reportedly told the legislators that police are investigating into the murder from all angles. Police have so far arrested eight persons after collecting evidence on their involvement in the murder. While informing the delegation that he has taken note of all points raised by the BJP legislators, Mr. Agrawal reportedly told the legislators that the city police need time to trace all accused involved in the murder.

The silent reading movement in the Mylapore-Mandaveli-RA Puram area showed up first at Nageswara Rao Park around two years ago, with modest ambitions, when Balaji launched it along with other reading enthusiasts from the region. This initiative has now moved parks, and seems to set to get entrenched in one. Due to renovation work at Nageswara Park, the reading session became irregular. With the Nageswara Rao park work gaining more surface area, it had to be shifted elsewhere. And it seems set to continue with a newly discovered green patch in RK Nagar in the Sundays to follow.
