The proposal to conduct a caste-based census in Bihar has got the approval of the Bihar cabinet.
A meeting of the Bihar cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was held on Thursday, in which the proposal was approved.
In the meeting, it was decided that work related to the census should begin at the earliest with the entire process to be completed before February 2023.
The exercise will be called Jaati Aadharit Ganana.
A decision to go ahead with the caste-based census was unanimously taken by all the political parties, including the BJP, present at an all-party meeting chaired by the Bihar CM a day earlier.
1. The Bihar government has given the task of conducting a caste-based census to the General Administration Department.2. The District Magistrate of the concerned district has been appointed as the nodal officer for conducting the caste-based census at the district level.3. Caste-based census work will be done in each district under the complete supervision of the concerned District Magistrate.4. The General Administration Department and the District Magistrate will be able to take the services of the employees working in different departments at village level, panchayat level and higher level for the census.5. Efforts will also be made to survey the economic status of the people during the caste-based census.6. All castes and sub-castes of all religions will be counted.7. The Bihar government will conduct the caste-based census from its own resources. An estimated expenditure of Rs 500 crore has been approved by the government. Provision of this money will be made from the Bihar Contingency Fund.8. Target to complete the work before February 2023.9. The progress of the census will be apprised from time to time to the leaders of various parties in the Vidhan Sabha.10. After completion of the exercise, the work of planning and implementation of the development of different castes will be done on the basis of the data that will be presented.
