Biden says sanctions against Russia are proportionate response: 'Now is the time to de-escalate'

President Joe Biden said Thursday that the sanctions he announced on Russia are a proportionate response to cyber attacks against the US and interference in two different presidential elections, and said, "Now is the time to de-escalate"
In short remarks at the White House, Biden said he told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a call earlier in the week that he could have gone further with the measures. While he wanted to avoid escalating tensions, Biden made clear that he will not hesitate to take further action in the future. "We cannot allow a foreign power to interfere in our democratic process with impunity," Biden said.
A federal judge on Friday blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from enforcing most of his executive order on elections against the vote-by-mail states Washington and Oregon, in the latest blow to Trump’s efforts to require documentary proof of citizenship to vote and to require that all ballots be received by Election Day.

A Border Patrol agent shot two people in Portland, Oregon, during a traffic stop after authorities said they were associated with a Venezuelan gang, another incident in a string of confrontations with federal authorities that have left Americans frustrated with immigration enforcement during the Trump administration.
