The third phase of polling will decide the fate of 211 candidates, including 31 each from Trinamool and BJP, 13 from CPI(M) and seven from Congress.
The third phase of elections in West Bengal on April 6 will see polling in 31 constituencies of Hooghly, Howrah, and South 24 Parganas districts. Most of these seats have remained loyal to the Trinamool Congress in every format of elections since 2011. In the last Lok Sabha election, the BJP replaced the Left Front to mount a formidable challenge in these seats, much like in the rest of Bengal. In 2016, the BJP secured only 7 per cent votes in these seats, while the Left clocked an impressive 37 per cent vote share. The year 2019 witnessed a reversal of sorts, with the BJP garnering 37 per cent votes and the Left vote share declining to a mere 8.33 per cent. However, despite its spectacular performance in 2019, the BJP was leading in only two of the 31 seats going to polls on Tuesday Pursurah and Goghat, both in Hooghly district. The Trinamool, on the other hand, kept its record intact. It had won 29 of these seats in 2016, and secured leads in the same number of assembly segments in 2019. The third phase of polling will decide the fate of 211 candidates, including 31 each from Trinamool and BJP, 13 from CPI(M) and seven from Congress.More Related News
