As the monsoon is nearing, Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department and Administrator of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Tushar Giri Nath has directed officials to remain alert and proactive during the rainy season to prevent flooding and manage rain-related disasters effectively.
Chairing a multi-departmental review meeting at Vikas Soudha, Mr. Giri Nath emphasised the need for coordinated preventive action.
Bengaluru has identified 209 flood-prone areas, of which 166 have already seen mitigation efforts. Zonal Commissioners have been tasked to personally inspect the remaining 43 vulnerable locations and implement solutions.
He instructed departments such as BMRCL, K-RIDE, and KPTCL to prepare and submit a list of works to be carried out immediately. These departments must complete the work before heavy rains begin.
March surveys revealed 82 locations prone to water stagnation on key city roads. BBMP engineers have been directed to clean roadside drains based on the traffic police’s report and ensure smooth traffic flow.
With 20 fire stations and one SDRF unit active in Bengaluru, Mr. Giri Nath urged zonal commissioners to maintain direct communication with them throughout the monsoon. He also mandated maintaining a contact list of fire personnel.
Mr. Giri Nath said to streamline disaster coordination, nine permanent control rooms (eight zonal, one central) and 63 sub-divisional centers will operate round the clock. WhatsApp groups involving officials from BBMP, BESCOM, BWSSB, and others will facilitate real-time problem-solving.
