Ambassador Puneet Agrawal said, "India has direct stakes in ensuring the return of peace and stability to the country."
India on Friday voiced concern over the increasing attempt towards removing women from public life in Afghanistan, calling for ensuring protection of rights of women and girls and that long-fought gains of the last two decades are not reversed.
"As a contiguous neighbour and long-standing partner of Afghanistan, India has direct stakes in ensuring the return of peace and stability to the country," Ambassador Puneet Agrawal, Deputy Permanent Representative of India, Permanent Mission of India in Geneva.
Speaking at the urgent debate on "the situation of human rights of women and girls in Afghanistan" at the 50th Session of the Human Rights Council, he said given India's strong historical and civilisational linkages to the Afghan people, "we are deeply concerned about the recent developments in Afghanistan, which directly impact the well-being of women and girls of Afghanistan. There has been an increasing attempt towards removing women from public life in Afghanistan".
"We join others in calling for ensuring the protection of rights of women and girls, including their right to education, and to ensure that the long-fought gains of the last two decades are not reversed," Mr Agrawal said.
