
Anti-tobacco drive in Maddur; 84 cases registered for COTPA violations

A total of 84 cases were registered for violations of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) during a special enforcement drive conducted in the Shivapura and Bharathinagar areas of Maddur taluk on January 27.
A total of 84 cases were registered for violations of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) during a special enforcement drive conducted in the Shivapura and Bharathinagar areas of Maddur taluk on January 27.
During the drive conducted to prevent illegal sale and use of tobacco products, 62 cases were registered under Section 4 of the COTPA Act, which prohibits smoking in public places, with penalties against the offenders amounting to a total ₹14,500.
Under Section 6A, which prohibits the sale or supply of tobacco products to anyone under 18 years of age, a total of 10 cases were booked. A fine of ₹1,000 was also collected.
Under Section 6B, which prohibits sale of tobacco products within a radius of 100 yards from an educational institution, 12 cases were registered with fines totalling ₹1,150. “In total, 84 cases were registered, and fines amounting to ₹16,650 were imposed,” a statement said.
The operation was carried out jointly by the District Health and Family Welfare Department, Mandya; the Office of the District Enforcement Officer; the District Tobacco Control Cell, Mandya; the Taluk Health Officer’s Office; Maddur City Municipal Council, KM Doddi and the Maddur Police Stations.
Those who participated in the operation included district consultant of the District Tobacco Control Cell, Thimmaraju; the taluk health education officer, Mariswamy; social worker Mohan Kumar; Bharathinagara health inspector Manjunath; Maddur city municipal health inspector, Bharath; police personnel Onkarappa and Girija Halli, among others.
