Justice Renee Pomerance told the jury in a Windsor, Ont. courtroom she had no choice but to adjourn for the day.
The Nathaniel Veltman murder trial has adjourned for the weekend.
The jury entered the courtroom Friday morning only to be told they can go home because a juror is sick.
“I really don't have any choice but to adjourn for the day, I'm sorry," said Justice Renee Pomerance.
She told them she hopes the juror will be back Monday and if not "we may well proceed that day in any event."
Twenty-two-year-old Nathaniel Veltman is accused of deliberately hitting the Afzaal family more than two years ago while they were out for a walk in London, Ontario.
Veltman has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
Veltman told the jury last week he felt an "urge" to hit the family and that he knew his actions were considered a terrorist attack.
