Hosting Merkel in the Oval Office, President Joe Biden called her "a great friend, a personal friend, and a friend of the United States." Merkel -- who has dealt with four US presidents during her 16 years in power, but is stepping down later this year -- hailed her "friendship" with the United States and its contribution "to a free and democratic Germany."
