Bantwal police arrest absconding Taj Mohammed Yusuf after 12 years in a Foreigners Act case involving his Thai wife.
The Bantwal Rural police arrested Taj Mohammed Yusuf, who was absconding for the last 12 years, in a case registered against him under the provisions of the Foreigners Act.
A team of police personnel, comprising constables Shivanand Maddi, Siddappa and Praveen, apprehended Yusuf from an area in Karkala in Udupi district on Tuesday. He was produced before the jurisdictional court on Tuesday, and the magistrate remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
The police said Yusuf married a Thai citizen, and they stayed together in an area within the Bantwal Rural Police Station limits. When the police checked the records of the Thai citizen, she was found to be illegally extending her stay even after the expiry of her visa. The police booked a case against the woman, Yusuf and a few others.
The Thai woman and a couple of others were arrested, while Yusuf remained at large. A non-bailable warrant was issued against Yusuf. The Dakshina Kannada court has acquitted the woman and two others. Following arrest, Yusuf will be tried before the court for the offences under Foreigners Act, the police said.

The Clamorous reed warbler is as loud as they come, but in the urban environment, it is outshouted. Weed clearing in urban habitats brings down its home, the bulrushes. Bulrushes in wetlands are not encroachments, but ‘legal homes’ to birds in the crake and rail family and warblers, so government line agencies ought to tread on them thoughtfully
