A US federal court charged a Russian national who stowed away on a flight from New York to Paris last week in a Brooklyn courtroom Thursday. Svetlana Dali, 57, was charged with being a stowaway on a vessel or aircraft without consent and could face up to five years in prison if convicted. She appeared in court Thursday afternoon and did not enter a plea. Dali’s attorney, Michael Schneider of the Brooklyn Federal Defenders, likened her offense to “turnstile hopping” and noted that she did pass security screening. The government and defense agreed to a temporary order of detention until 2 p.m. Friday so they can put together a bail package. The key issue is finding a suitable residence for her. Dali, who French authorities identified as the rogue passenger, was arrested by the FBI Wednesday upon her deportation to the US. Dali’s extraordinary journey has raised serious questions about airport security. Here’s what we know:

A federal judge on Friday blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from enforcing most of his executive order on elections against the vote-by-mail states Washington and Oregon, in the latest blow to Trump’s efforts to require documentary proof of citizenship to vote and to require that all ballots be received by Election Day.

A Border Patrol agent shot two people in Portland, Oregon, during a traffic stop after authorities said they were associated with a Venezuelan gang, another incident in a string of confrontations with federal authorities that have left Americans frustrated with immigration enforcement during the Trump administration.
