At least 73 people have died in Karnataka between June and August in heavy rain, floods, and lightning.
At least 73 people have died in around two months in rain-related incidents in Karnataka. Between June 1 and August 7, 15 people died after being struck by lightning, five died after trees fell on them, 19 deaths occurred in incidents of house collapse, 24 people were swept away in flooded rivers, nine died in landslides and one person died due to electrocution.
More than 7,300 people have taken shelter in 75 relief camps. As many as 8,197 people were shifted to safety The heavy downpour in Karnataka has hit 161 villages in 14 districts.The resultant floods have affected nearly 21,727 people in recent days, according to government data.As many as 666 houses have been completely damaged while 2,949 were severely damaged and 17,750 houses were partially damaged. Agricultural crops on 1,29,087 hectares and horticultural crops on 7,942 hectares were damaged.
The rain damaged 11,768 km of road, 1,152 bridges and culverts, 122 primary health centres, 2,249 Anganwadi centres, and 95 irrigation lakes.
Those who lost their houses completely will get Rs 5 lakh. Those whose homes have been severely or partially damaged will get Rs 3 lakh and Rs 50,000, respectively, as compensation.
