223 take oath as newly-elected MLAs of Tamil Nadu Assembly

A total of 223 of the 234 newly-elected members took oath as legislators of the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly at the Kalaivanar Arangam on Wallajah Salai, Chennai on Tuesday. Ten members, including Tourism Minister M. Mathiventhan and Minister for Backward Classes Welfare S.S. Sivasankar did not take the oath owing to personal and medical reasons. Soon after pro-tem Speaker K. Pitchandi commenced the first session of the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Council of Ministers, Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami, former Speaker P. Dhanapal, former Deputy Speaker Pollachi V. Jayaraman, floor leaders of various parties and other legislators submitted their certificates of election to the Assembly Secretary and took oath as members of the House.The election authorities are gearing up for the counting of votes cast in the simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, scheduled to be held on June 4. The Collectors and Election Officers of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) districts said on May 23 (Thursday) that their teams were ready for the counting of votes.
Responding to the prolonged water scarcity, the residents of the area took to the streets in protest on Wednesday. The protest, which drew attention to their plight, stopped only after the intervention of the police. It was not until 1.30 p.m. that a 4000-litre tanker was finally delivered by BWSSB, providing relief to the water-starved residents.
