• Two members of the West Virginia National Guardsmen who were shot in Washington, DC are in critical condition, officials said today. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser described the attack as a “targeted shooting.” • The guardsmen were performing “high visibility patrols” when they were shot, according to police officials, who added the suspected shooter was “subdued” and taken into custody. • Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has asked for 500 more National Guard troops to be deployed to Washington, DC, following the shooting, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said. The Trump administration today asked a federal appeals court for an emergency stay of last week’s order from a federal judge to remove the National Guard from Washington, DC. Last week, district Judge Jia Cobb ruled that President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to the nation’s capital was unlawful. Cobb, siding with the district’s attorney general’s office, said that the administration “exceeded the bounds of their authority” in how it deployed National Guard troops in the city, and “acted contrary to law” when it deployed the DC National Guard “for non-military, crime-deterrence missions in the absence of a request from the city’s civil authorities.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth risked compromising sensitive military information that could have endangered US troops through his use of Signal to discuss attack plans, a Pentagon watchdog said in an unclassified report released Thursday. It also details how Hegseth declined to cooperate with the probe.
