14 fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy after protest in Rameswaram, as 87 boats from Pamban went fishing.
A day after fishermen called off their indefinite protest in Rameswaram, 14 fishermen who went into sea were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday (March 6, 2025) night.
Sources said, as 87 boats from Pamban went into the sea for fishing on Thursday, 14 fishermen, sailing in fishing boat, were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy at around 8 p.m.
The Sri Lankan authorities on February 23 arrested 32 Indian fishermen and seized five fishing boats for allegedly venturing into the country’s territorial waters.
The Navy has so far this year arrested over 140 Indian fishermen for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
The Sri Lanka Navy said they arrested over 550 Indian fishermen in 2024.
The fishermen issue has been a contentious one in the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering Sri Lankan territorial waters.
