Major banks began delivering $1,400 stimulus checks on Wednesday, part of the IRS' effort to send 100 million checks over the next 10 days. The timing of the checks has been an issue of concern to many people who are struggling with bills as the economy remains hobbled by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Internal Revenue Service said on Wednesday that it had delivered 90 million payments valued at $242 billion in its first batch of checks, while another 150,000 checks worth about $442 million were sent via mail. On Monday, IRS and Treasury officials said about 100 million checks would be distributed within 10 days. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
