London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he will not yield to U.S. President Donald Trump's pressure over Greenland, following Trump's criticism of the UK-Mauritius Chagos Islands deal.
Starmer noted that Trump had previously supported the agreement but later attacked it to pressure the UK on Greenland. Addressing Parliament, he said the future of Greenland is a matter for the people of Greenland and Denmark alone.
Starmer will host Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Thursday. He added that he wants him to retreat from his position, and he will not do so.
Trump has threatened 10% tariffs on European countries, including the UK, if they oppose his Greenland proposal, while ruling out military action. Britain retains control of the joint British-American base on Diego Garcia under a £3.4 billion May agreement.
