A Special Investigation Team (SIT), on Wednesday, released the contact details of its members for encouraging eye witnesses of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence to record their statements and provide digital evidence. The SIT also ensured people that their identity would be kept confidential and security would be provided to them if they want.
The SIT was constituted on October 26 to look into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case after the Supreme Court raised aspersion on the Uttar Pradesh government of listing mere 23 eyewitnesses in the case, while about 4,000-5,000 farmer protestors were present at the scene at the time of the incident.
"There were hundreds of farmers in the rally, there are only 23 eyewitnesses?" asked the apex court on Tuesday while ordering the Uttar Pradesh government to provide police protection to the witnesses listed in the case. The court will next hear the matter on November 8.
SIT, on Tuesday, arrested two more accused identified as Vichitra and Gurvinder Singh. The arrest was made based on an FIR filed by another accused Sumit Jaiswal, the investigation team informed.
